RE:                 2012 Southern Regional Artistic Championships

Dear Members:

Once again we will be hosting the Southern Regional Championships at the SpinNations

Skating Center in the beautiful City of Port Richey, Florida.  We look forward to returning

to where we feel welcomed and comfortable.

As in years past, the SpinNations personnel has been working closely with our Organization

to secure local businesses to support us in an effort to host another “Special” event.

During the last few months every effort has been made to ensure that your Championships will maintain the high standards of the past.  Our objective is to present an environment that will allow your athletes to perform at their peak performance.   This has been and will be are

#1 priority.

Although we will make every attempt to please everyone, we know this can never be the case.

We are hopeful that we will please the majority.  For others who find problems, we can only

learn from our mistakes or short-coming and hope that they will respectfully acknowledge

their unrest to the Regional Staff.

Attached you will find information pertaining to the 2012 Regional Championships. Please

read carefully.   If you have any questions please email or call me and I will make every

attempt to resolve any confusion you may have.

Sincerely,

Gloria Manning

MAY 21, 2011 – SPINNATIONS SKATING CENTER – SO. REGIONAL SPEED MEETING

Meeting was called to order by Gloria Manning, President at 1:40pm (during lunch break)

24 Coaches were in Attendance

Minutes from the 2010 Meeting were approved

It was announced that Angela Serini is filling the position of Secretary for retired Ted Leineke

Treasurer, Jeff Kujawa, collected dues for the 2011-2012 season.

Jeff Kujawa reported the Treasury balance as a little over $25,000. The balance is increasing yearly due mostly to the Pasco County’s sponsoring of our Regional Championship event which began 2 years ago.  For the 2011 championships event, we are slated to receive $12,950 per Gloria.  Jeff stated that the county considers total “room nite” numbers as the most important aspect in determining the sponsorship amount.  We need to make sure all of the hotel registration forms are filled out upon registering so that Angie can track the room nites.

Jeff also stated that monies in the account should be used to better the sport.  To make some suggestions for speed, his thoughts include as follows:

(1)    Purchase a Finish Line Camera

(2)    Possibly increase skater grants to $1,000. ea.

Jeff is interested in hearing your thoughts and encouraged the clubs to send in their ideas.

Finally, he stated please pay your dues.  That is your power to vote.

Gloria Manning reported information from the National Board of Directors meeting which took place 4/30th & 5/1/11 in Orlando.

(1)    The Testing Program which is currently based on “Quads” will be revised for “In-Lines.”

(2)    An Executive decision for the Pan American Championships was made…..sending 3 contestants with a $500.00 grant each was approved.  Gloria commented that we have to support the championships; otherwise in the eyes of the OTC, they will not support our sport.

Bids:  Gloria reported that there was one bid for the 2012 Speed Regionals and that came from Spinnations.  Gloria mentioned that the owner will do just about anything to help us hold a great championship.

C.J. from So. Fl. Blades commented that the Speed track at Spinnations was not laid out properly. Steve Pyles, Coach of the Team at Spinnations was asked about the tract and he stated that the track was laid down in accordance with USAC specifications. (Chief Referee, Allen Hughes, was also consulted during the championships and found no apparent discrepancy).

Jim Blair opened the floor to suggestions on the date of the 2012 Speed Regionals.  Ed. Mueller commented that if we should consider any move into June, it might be hard to get good Referees  because of the other speed regionals going on at that  time.  Jeff also commented that it is well known that we treat our officials very well and we have never had trouble getting good officials to come work our event.  Angie also commented that most of the food that we bring in for the officials is donated from local restaurants so our regional income/sponsorship is not effected.   Jim Blair made the suggestion of the 2nd week in June.  No one introduced any other date at which time Mr. Blair asked if everyone was for that date.  Hands went up.  He asked if anyone was opposed.  No one opposed.  He finished by asking everyone to think about it and get back with him before the end of the competition.

Motion to adjourn……….all approved.

Recording Secretary Angela Serini

Gloria noted that the 2nd week of June has always been the weekend of the Artistic Championships so another date must be decided.

MINUTES OF 2011 ARTISTIC REGIONAL MEETING HELD 6/14/11

President, Gloria Manning, opened the meeting at 7:20am……….

There were 19 in attendance with 11 clubs represented.

The Art and Speed 2010 Minutes were read which prompted a question concerning the speed minutes and whether a region can purchase their own medals rather than going thru the national office.  Gloria responded that this was checked thru Richard Hawkins and the answer is “NO”……..not allowed.  Also stated in the speed minutes was the fact that sometimes speed equipment (not owned by the region) is borrowed for a fee.  The question prompted was “does this work better” than purchasing.  Gloria said “not really” but speed requires more equipment than art to run their event and at times it has become necessary.

Janet Pavilonis made a motion to accept the minutes and Nancy Crumbock 2nd

Gloria gave a report for our Region’s Financial Officer, Jeff Kujawa as Jeff was unable to attend.  The region’s bank account balance is up from last year (but did not have the exact balance) and in accordance with our “non-Profit” status, we need to start showing that we are spending money.  Gloria said that she cut back on regional expenses the last few years because of the lack of funds.  Per diem was cut for the regional staff.  These are the people that are there pretty much all day and all night during the 3 days we run.  There was not a complaint nor did any one quit when they were told that they would be donating their time without any compensation a few years back.  Starting with 2011, the region is paying per diem again. She stated that her regional team is wonderful and she cannot do without them.

Gloria also stated that Lillian Gauvin  has taken the cashier positon at the front door in place of Retired Dottie Leinecke and Angie Serini is filling the  Secretary position in place of retired Ted Leineke.

Janet Pavilonis asked about the requirements to spend money in the regional account.

Gloria said that she does not have the total authority to spend (other than necessary expenses) and that the final approval on other expenditures comes from our Financial Officer, Jeff Kujawa.  Gloria stated that she does have a recommendation and that is that the So. Region World Team receive $1,000.00 each to help with their expenses.  If any of the clubs have any other recommendations, please let Gloria know your ideas.  Also, equipment for speed will be purchased instead of borrowed.

Last year, there was an Executive Committee Decision which allowed USAC/RC  to give $3,000. to Jessica Gaudy, Jessica Fuerenstein and Andy Pavilonis.  John Burchfield and Shawna received $500. from our Region approved by vote.

Nancy Crumbock asked about the phrase she sees frequently where speed is concerned.. “Recognized by the Olympic Committee”  Gloria  agreed that Speed does get more recognition than art.  Gloria stated that speed is recognized as a cross-over “feeder sport”.

Gloria reported that HOCKEY will now be governed by our sport.  On the numbers, Speed and art have less members than Roller Derby.  CIPA has accepted Roller Derby and so now we have added another sport to our organization.

Vickie Bateman made a motion to give $1,000. each to our World Team Members.

Rebecca Pallessen 2nd  No one opposed.

Gloria announced that China has invited the U.S. skaters along with other countries to participate in the “China Artistic Roller Skating Grandprix” at the end of August in Shanghai.  It is a two week trip and we can send 2 skaters per each category.  The prizes will be U.S. dollars.  It has been requested that John, Andy and Hector, Eric & Siobhan go to China at a cost of $3,000. each; but this will be difficult because  of the timing and money and basically interference in their daily lives with school and work.

Janet Pavilonis made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report and was 2nd by Rebecca Pallesen.

Gloria announced that Caroline Bell had passed her Gold Medal Circle Figure Test.

Tony Berger presented the Artistic report.  He stated that he will be attending the national

Regional Representative Meeting and stated that we need an Alternate.  Janet Pavilonis was nominated and approved.

Tony stated that we need to be active to build our sport.  There is a Business portion and a skating portion.  Business first………….Suggested a Recreational Card.  He mentioned that Italy does a good job.  They work together but they are paid by their government.

We have to learn how to make money without the competition aspect.  We need to find a way to grow.  Tony suggested forming a committee to work on ideas to improve our sport. No committee was formed.  This will be brought up at the next meeting.

It was mentioned that there are coaches who hold coach cards simply to attend the national championship but are not actively teaching.  This is not right. A few minutes of miscellaneous complaints were made and suggestion for how to eliminate this problem has been requested.

Gloria said that she is thinking about re-doing the region’s email mailing list and probably dropping addresses.  She is aware that there are people still on her list that are no longer involved  and should be removed.  There will be a list made from currently paid clubs to receive future mailings.

Our Pasco County sponsorship this year is $12,950..  We had 2 bids, one from Spinnations, the other from Kathy Nave, Augusta, Georgia, as a back up venue.  Gloria stated that it is always good to have a back up rink in case something were to happen, such as fire, flood, change of ownership, etc. and we could not use the rink we contracted to use.

Gloria stated that we have a USOC Coaching Ethics Code which the World Team Coaches and Manager must sign.  It outlines the responsibilities of the coach but it does not include penalties.  Gloria stated that most coaches would not teach another coaches student without their permission but some will.  Approaching the Board to add penalties is questionable.  It will not change the situation.  Angie suggested that the clubs incorporate their own rules regarding coach conduct.

Gloria stated that only rink owners have control of coaches who do not respect the right of others or the Code of Ethics.

Janet Pavilonis stated that the Regional schedule was based on prior years’ scheduling.  However, this year we found too many conflicts as many new events were added.  She asked that the clubs review this year’s schedule and advise her of any conflicts so that changes can be made

Well in advance.  Look at 2011’s schedule as though it is 2012

In spite of the schedule, the championship ran very well, the best in years stated Gloria.

The “judging” during the regionals also received many compliments.

Gloria stated that this year’s seminar was planned around the Regional Championships and we were fortunate to have 4 speakers. Based on the good attendance of this year, we will again host a Regional Seminar.  Next year will be an all day event which will include classroom work at the hotel, group instruction at the rink and private lessons.  We will be requesting the Regional Officials to be our guest speakers.  Art officials are Pat and Mike Jacques, Keith Ungricht, Billy Mastriano, John Cawley, Al Taglang, Ted Hansford and John Hultquist plus more to complete a panel of 9.  Although Al Taglang and Ted Hansford are Southern Region Officials, they are listed out of Lincoln due to National Judging Credentials and we can use them as out-of-state officials.

Gloria also stated that Lee Remley (B Commission) did some judging this year and did a good job.  There will be a local“B” judge chosen for next year as well, and will be chosen based on their qualifications and performance history.

TERMS EXPIRING – Nancy Crumbock’s Executive Committee position is expiring.

Cookie was nominated to serve for another term which ends in 2015.  Diana McIntyre 2nd.  All were in favor.

Eric Hadley was invited to judge the Great Lakes Regional.  Congrats to Eric.

Angie Serini asked about nominations for the Secretary position she was asked to fill when Ted Retired .  Tony Berger nominated Angie Serini There was an overwhelming approval that Angie should stay.  She will serve in this position until 2013.

Meeting Ended at approximately 12:00pm.

Motion to adjourn……….all approved.
